Group policy installation (GPO)

The information in this article applies to:

  • WinWay Resume Deluxe 11.00.024 and later
  • WinWay Resume Deluxe 12 and later

Summary

Some organizations may wish to deploy WinWay Resume Deluxe automatically to a number of computers. This can be done through the "Group Policy" feature, available in Windows 2000, Windows Server 2003, and later. Please note that WinWay requires a license for each computer that has access to the software.

This is a complex procedure intended for experienced system administrators. If GPO deployment is not required, see the simpler administrative installation procedure.

More Information

Step 1 - Install to the shared folder

Follow the first part of the administrative installation procedure - creating a shared folder on the server. The rest of this article describes how to automate the second part of the administrative installation - the "deployment" part.

Step 2 - Deploy via Group Policy

  1. The instructions below were developed on Windows Server 2003. Other servers should be quite similar
  2. On the server, select Start, All Programs, Administrative Tools, Active Directory Users and Computers
  3. Right click on your domain name and select Properties
  4. Click on the "Group Policy" tab
  5. Click on the "Default Domain Policy" and the click on "Edit" (Alternately, you may create a new policy)
  6. You will enter the Group Policy Object Editor
  7. Note that there are two major trees: "Computer Configuration" and "User Configuration." Each has a "software installation" sub tree

If your users are using a previous version, it is important to use the same deployment method: "User" or "Computer" as you used for the previous version. Otherwise, uninstall of the previous version may not be complete.

If upgrading from WinWay Resume Deluxe version 6.0 or earlier, use the "Computer Configuration" sub tree. If this is not an upgrade installation, you may use either method.

Note that "computer" installation requires a workstation reboot, while "user" installation requires only logout/login sequence.
  8. Click on the "Software Installation" branch selected according to the previous step
  9. Right click on "Software Installation" and select "New," "Package"
  10. Choose "<server>\<shared folder>\isscript8.msi", if available. Some versions of WinWay Resume may not have this file, in such case skip this step. If this file is installed, it must be added first

Note: It is crucial that you use the "<server>\<shared folder>" path, which is accessible to users, and not a local path that only works on this sever. For example, do not choose "c:\shared\isscript8.msi" but " but "\\<server>\<shared folder>\isscript8.msi"
  11. When asked for "deployment method", choose "Assigned," unless other method is desired
  12. Repeat steps 9 through 11 for the file "WinWay Resume Deluxe.msi" in the same folder
  13. Modify the security settings of the newly added items to restrict the distribution to the users/computers that have been authorized by the license

Step 3 - Optional - Add policy template

To learn about Group Policy Templates, visit http://support.microsoft.com/kb/816662

To apply the administrative template:

  1. WinWay Resume Deluxe contains a group policy template (winres.adm) at the same folder where the .msi file is located. Please note that the policy template is version-specific.
  2. Copy the policy template to "<server>\<shared folder>\"
  3. On the server, select Start, All Programs, Administrative Tools, Active Directory Users and Computers
  4. Note the "Administrative Templates" item under both "Computer Configuration" and under "User Configuration." Use the same branch used in for the software installation
  5. Right click on the appropriate "Administrative Templates" item and choose "Add/Remove templates"
  6. Click on "Add" and use the network path (<server>\<shared folder>\<*.adm file>) to access the WinWay Resume administrative template
  7. Under "Administrative Templates," click on "WinWay Resume Deluxe"
  8. Modify template settings as necessary.

Note that for any policy to be in effect, you must do TWO things:

    (1) Activate the "Enabled" radio button; and

    (2) Fill-in policy-specific fields, typically a checkbox or an edit box. For example, to "Disable Internet Features" you need to choose "Enabled" and also check the checkbox marked "Check to activate this policy"

Step 4 - Test Deployment

  1. Note that it takes a while for group policies to propagate through the network. We will use the following steps to expedite this process
  2. Log into one of the authorized workstations as an administrator
  3. Select Start, Run, and type "cmd"
  4. At the DOS prompt, type "gpupdate" - this will force an update of this workstation policies
  5. If you are using "Computer" policies, reboot the computer. This will trigger the policy into action. This step is not typically necessary for "user" policies
  6. Login as a user
  7. To start the WinWay Resume application, select Start, Programs, WinWay Resume, WinWay Resume Deluxe. Alternately you may click on the desktop icon if one was installed
  8. Upon first activation of the application, you may see the Windows Installer invoked to complete the installation. That is normal
  9. The application should be completely operational

Step 5 - Optional - Tweaking Administrative Template Options

  1. If you applied the administrative template, you may now tweak the behavior of the application by modifying template options as shown in step 5
  2. Use the "gpupdate" method described above the expedite workstation updates, and re-boot them if applying a "computer" policy

Step 6 - Troubleshooting

  1. A common mistake is to add the .msi package and the .adm template using a local, rather than network path. To verify, remove them and add them again.
  2. Ensure that users have read/execute/list access to the .msi file and to the policy .adm file
  3. If deploying a "computer" policy, reboot each workstation to apply the policy. If necessary, run "gpupdate" from the DOS prompt and reboot again
  4. If deploying a "user" policy, logout and then login again from each workstation
